I am familiar with the subprime lending that has taken place and how it has affected the economy and the lending industry in general and I don’t want to waste my time applying for a mortgage until my credit score is where it should be.
I can put down between $20,000 to $40,000 and would like to know what my score has to be to get a mortgage. I live in Texas (if this helps). My credit could be better and is mostly school loans. Does anyone know how to find out your credit score and what is needed?

We recently accumulated $45,000 in medical debt and we were planning on buying a house. We can afford to pay the bills and a mortgage, but I am worried we won’t be able to get pre-approved for a loan now.
